Introduction of Global Women's Studies Entry

I do believe I would consider myself a feminist. A feminist is defined as someone who advocates political, social, legal, and economic rights for women to equal to those of men. This definition portrays something I do believe in. I believe women and men should be given the same rights politically, socially, and economically, which is what feminism is. There should be more female presidents, more female CEOs, and more females in Congress. Women need to start earning the same amount of money as a man. There needs to be less violence on women. Women need to stop depending on men. Women need to start being leaders and not followers. Men need to learn women are given the same exact rights they are. The chapter displays that feminism is seen as negative to society saying that people who display themselves as feminist usually are called lesbian, butch, or a man-hater. I do believe feminism is seen as negative because I too thought a feminist would be considered these things. This is because I didn’t know feminism meant the equal rights of men and women, which is where this stereotype starts. Television and the media portray feminism in such a negative way, never portraying what feminism truly is. Lots of people agree with the fact that men and women should have equal rights and they aren’t lesbian, butch, or a man-hater. I am a heterosexual white female who loves to dress up for her boyfriend, and I still believe I am a feminist who believes in the equality of men and women.

  1. I completely agree with you in that feminism is often portrayed in a negative light in society. I think that most people have a lost of misguided preconceived notions about feminism, such as the majority of the followers being lesbians and "man haters". It's very easy to latch on to that stereotype and assign it to the entire group, but I agree with you in that I think the essence of feminism has great intentions. The movement promotes equality for the sexes, even though sometimes this movement is misgiven as hatred for men or the thought that women are superior.

  2. I agree with you on every point you made Sydney. I believe that there is a double standard placed upon women in our society because of what is portrayed on television and throughout the media.
